VPNs and Tor both get lumped into “online privacy tools,” but they solve different problems, and confusing the two leads to a lot of bad advice.

What a VPN actually does

A VPN routes your traffic through a single server run by a company you’re trusting, encrypting it between your device and that server. Your internet provider can no longer see what you’re doing, but the VPN provider technically can — you’ve just moved the trust from one party to another. VPNs are great for hiding your traffic from your local network or ISP, and for accessing region-locked content.

What Tor actually does

Tor routes your traffic through three separate, independently-run relays instead of one company’s servers, and no single relay knows both who you are and what you’re visiting. That decentralization is what makes Tor meaningfully harder to compromise than a single VPN provider, but it comes at the cost of speed — your traffic is taking a longer, encrypted detour.

Using them together

Some people connect to a VPN before opening Tor (“Tor over VPN”) so that their ISP sees VPN traffic instead of Tor traffic, which can be useful in places where Tor use itself draws attention. Others avoid combining them because it adds another party into the trust chain. Neither approach is wrong — it depends on what you’re trying to protect against.

Which one do you need?

If your main concern is your ISP or local network snooping on ordinary browsing, a reputable VPN is usually enough. If your concern is stronger anonymity against a more capable observer, Tor is built for that specific job. They’re complementary tools, not competitors.
